The profiles of angiology and vascular surgery academic leagues and their effectiveness in specialty education
Conclusions The angiology and vascular surgery academic leagues in the state of S ão Paulo all function in a similar manner, but the range of theoretical, practical and scientific activities they offer are not uniform. For the sample investigated, the academic leagues appear to be effective at teaching angiology and vascular surgery during undergraduate courses.

Vascular surgery: What increases the flow of students to the speciality?
CONCLUSIONS: A one-day conference can significantly impact students' perception especially when there is a lack of exposure within the undergraduate curriculum. This course helped to increase positive perception and dispute negative misconceptions about the speciality. The simulation workshops held at this conference increased students' confidence and awareness of relevant surgical skills. This conference provided a unique experience that positively impacted and inspired students and thus served as an important supplement to core medical curriculum. A survey of 0 + 5 vascular surgery residency candidates: Perceptions of an applicant pool.
CONCLUSION: Applicants remained positive about their planned training and career paths. Attending vascular surgeons were identified as the strongest mentors, yet most students decided only in their third and fourth years to pursue 0 + 5 residencies. Educational debt remains a concern, and there may be consideration for a concerted effort to recruit potential candidates sooner. PMID: 26864776 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Outcomes of the V-Healthy Awareness Campaign That Empowers High-School Students to Understand and Diagnose Vascular Disease Risk Factors
Just imagine the impact of empowering young high-school students to become the Sherlock Holmes of vascular health and disease. V-Healthy is a grassroots vascular education and awareness campaign that educates high-school students of the importance of vascular disease risks they face today and its impact decades later.

Gender differences in abdominal aortic aneurysm presentation, repair, and mortality in the Vascular Study Group of New England
Objective: Prior studies of gender differences in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair suggest there may be differences in presentation, suitability for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), and outcomes between men and women. Methods: We used the Vascular Study Group of New England database to identify all patients undergoing EVAR or open AAA repair. We analyzed demographics, comorbidities, and procedural, and perioperative data. Results were compared using the Fisher exact test and the Student t-test. Multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards modeling were performed to identify predictors of mortalit...

The Effect of Mentoring Relationships on Interest in Vascular Surgery and Match Rank among Integrated Vascular Surgery Residents
Mentoring relationships are encouraged for medical students interested in surgical specialties. Research on mentoring in other specialties indicates that while having a mentor does not show benefit, effective mentoring influences success in the residency match. We investigated the role of medical school mentoring relationships of integrated Vascular Surgery residents.

The Wikipedia Medical Student: Comparing the Quality of Vascular Surgery Topics Across Two Commonly Used Educational Resources
Medical students commonly refer to Wikipedia.org as their preferred online resource for medical education. To date, the quality and readability of common vascular disorders on Wikipedia has not been evaluated or compared against a standard textbook of surgery. The aims of this study were to (1) assess the quality of Wikipedia.org articles against the equivalent chapters in a standard medical school textbook of surgery; (2) identify any errors of omission; and (3) compare the readability of both resources using ease-of-reading and grade-level tools.

Arteriovenous anastomosis learning curve using low cost simulator
Conclusions It was found that the training model used was effective for increasing learning of this technique. It is believed that future studies with larger samples or a higher number of phases could demonstrate both reduced time and improved quality of the anastomoses performed with statisti cal significance.

Translation into Brazilian Portuguese, cultural adaptation and validation of the Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire
CONCLUSION: The Brazilian-Portuguese version of the PEQ has high internal consistency and is a reliable quality of life measure for use in amputee patients, but is not associated with the SF-36 or FIM.CONTEXTO: Qualidade de vida tem sido a principal preocupação em pacientes com disfunção permanente.OBJETIVO: Traduzir, adaptar e validar uma versão Brasileira do Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ).MÉTODOS: O questionário foi traduzido para o Português, retraduzido para inglês e adaptado culturalmente para a população brasileira. Sessenta e cinco amputados transtibiais unilaterais (45 homens, 20 mulheres, mé...

Gelatin model for training ultrasound-guided puncture
CONCLUSIONS: The method proposed here can be used to easily construct a low-cost model using everyday materials that is suitable for large-scale training of ultrasound-guided puncture.CONTEXTO: É imprescindível a capacitação técnica da classe médica para a obtenção de um acesso vascular rápido e eficiente, sendo que os procedimentos de treinamento devem ser usados sabiamente como forma de familiarizar o aluno à técnica. Os modelos comerciais existentes são de alto custo ou não são eficientes, devendo ser criados novos modelos semelhantes ao que será visto num paciente.OBJETIVOS: Demonstrar a criação e a ut...

Impact of continuing education in vascular images analysis for endovascular planning
Conclusion: The study showed that continuing education in specialized course was effective for imparting understanding of the importance of the three-dimensional multiplanar reconstruction image analysis method and of image optimization algorithms.

Clinical importance of a star shaped branch of internal iliac artery and unusual branches of an abnormal obturator artery: rare vascular variations
Abstract The internal iliac artery (IIA) is one of the branches of the common iliac artery and supplies the pelvic viscera, the musculoskeletal part of the pelvis, the gluteal region, the medial thigh region and the perineum. During routine cadaveric dissection of a male cadaver for undergraduate Medical students, we observed variation in the course and branching pattern of the left IIA. The artery gave rise to two common trunks and then to the middle rectal artery, inferior vesicle artery and superior vesicle artery. The first, slightly larger, common trunk gave rise to an unnamed artery, the lateral sacral artery and the...

Analysis of risk factors related to minor and major lower limb amputations at a tertiary hospital
Conclusions Lower limb amputations at different levels are related to different risk factors. Ischemia of greater severity and morbidity was associated with major amputations, while neuropathy and preserved perfusion were more often related to minor amputations.
